[PDF] Network Reliability and Resilience Ilya Gertsbakh, Yoseph Shpungin (auth.)

Image
This book is devoted to the probabilistic description of a network in the process of its destruction, i.e. removal of its components (links, nodes) appearing as a result of technical failures, natural disasters or intentional attacks . It is focused on a practical approach to network reliability, based on application of Monte Carlo methodology to numerical evaluation of network most important structural parameters. This allows to obtain a probabilistic description of the network in the process of its destruction, to identify most important network components and to develop efficient heuristic algorithms for network optimal design. The methodology works with satisfactory accuracy and efficiency for small ?to-medium size networks. https://digzon.com/product/pdf-network-reliability-and-resilience-ilya-gertsbakh-yoseph-shpungin-auth/?fsp_sid=79557 #simple #Engineering #IlyaGertsbakh #YosephShpunginauth.

[PDF] The Scientific Papers of Sir George Darwin: Figures of Equilibrium of Rotating Liquid and Geophysical Investigations George Howard Darwin

Image
Sir George Darwin (1845-1912) was the second son and fifth child of Charles Darwin. After studying mathematics at Cambridge he read for the Bar, but soon returned to science and to Cambridge, where in 1883 he was appointed Plumian Professor of Astronomy and Experimental Philosophy. His family home is now the location of Darwin College. His work was concerned primarily with the effect of the sun and moon on tidal forces on Earth, and with the theoretical cosmogony which evolved from practical observation: he formulated the fission theory of the formation of the moon (that the moon was formed from still-molten matter pulled away from the Earth by solar tides). He also developed a theory of evolution for the Sun-Earth-Moon system based on mathematical analysis in geophysical theory. This volume of his collected papers covers figures of equilibrium of rotating liquid and geophysical investigations. https://digzon.com/product/pdf-the-scientific-papers-of-sir-george-darwin-figures-of-equilib...

pdf Animal Osmoregulation (Oxford Animal Biology Series) Tim Bradley

Image
Water is fundamental to life and all metabolic reactions are influenced by the aqueous environment in which they occur. Osmoregulation and water balance are therefore absolutely essential topics in animal physiology. Animal Osmoregulation collates a widely dispersed literature to produce a comprehensive and authoritative synthesis of the field, providing detailed examples of osmoregulatory processes at the organismal, organ and cellular level. It incorporates clear background information on ion regulation and transport (specifically in the light of recent molecular studies) and illustrates the physical principles to which each organism must adhere, as well as the phylogenetic constraints within which it must operate. As with other titles in the Oxford Animal Biology Series, the topic is addressed using examples from throughout the animal kingdom, identifying common themes that transcend taxonomy. https://digzon.com/product/pdf-animal-osmoregulation-oxford-animal-biology-series-tim-bradl...

[PDF] The Cuvier-Geoffrey Debate: French Biology in the Decades before Darwin Toby A. Appel

Image
For scientists, no event better represents the contest between form and function as the chief organizing principle of life as the debate between Georges Cuvier and Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire. This book presents the first comprehensive study of the celebrated French scientific controversy that focused the attention of naturalists in the first decades of the nineteenth century on the conflicting claims of teleology, morphology, and evolution, which ultimately contributed to the making of Darwin's theory. This history describes not only the scientific dimensions of the controversy and its impact on individuals and institutions, but also examines the meaning of the debate for culture and society in the years before Darwin. https://digzon.com/product/pdf-the-cuvier-geoffrey-debate-french-biology-in-the-decades-before-darwin-toby-a-appel-3/?fsp_sid=79881 #simple #Biology #TobyA.Appel

[PDF] Optical Spectroscopy of Glasses S. K. Lyo (auth.), I. Zschokke (eds.)

Image
During the last fifteen years the field of the investigation of glasses has experienced a period of extremely rapid growth, both in the development of new theoretical ap? proaches and in the application of new experimental techniques. After these years of intensive experimental and theoretical work our understanding of the structure of glasses and their intrinsic properties has greatly improved. In glasses we are con? fronted with the full complexity of a disordered medium. The glassy state is characterised not only by the absence of any long-range order; in addition, a glass is in a non-equilibrium state and relaxation processes occur on widely different time scales even at low temperatures. Therefore it is not surprising that these complex and novel physical properties have provided a strong stimulus for work on glasses and amorphous systems. The strikingly different properties of glasses and of crystalline solids, e. g. the low? temperature behaviour of the heat capacity and the the...

[PDF] Thermophiles: Biology and Technology at High Temperatures Frank Robb, Garabed Antranikian, Dennis Grogan, Arnold Driessen

Image
We might think of them as living on the very edge of existence. Referred to as extremophiles, these microorganisms exhibit the most radical capacity for adaptation in those harsh environments that are just barely conducive to the existence of cellular life. Unlocking the mechanisms and understanding the evolutionary development that allows these simple organisms to thrive can teach us much about microbiology in extremis. Highly diverse, these microorganisms are found nearly everywhere. One example, thermophiles are microorganisms that thrive at temperatures above the mesophilic range of 25-40 degrees C. Until recently, due to their extreme environment, the study of thermophiles was limited. However with the advent of new tools, particularly genetic analysis, remarkable strides have been made. Thermophiles: Biology and Technology at High Temperatures presents a cogent summary of the progress made in studying these extremophiles. Discover how thermophiles demonstrate extremes tha...

[PDF] Applied Mathematical Demography Nathan Keyfitz, Hal Caswell (auth.)

Image
The third edition of this classic text maintains its focus on applications of demographic models, while extending its scope to matrix models for stage-classified populations. The authors first introduce the life table to describe age-specific mortality, and then use it to develop theory for stable populations and the rate of population increase. This theory is then revisited in the context of matrix models, for stage-classified as well as age-classified populations. Reproductive value and the stable equivalent population are introduced in both contexts, and Markov chain methods are presented to describe the movement of individuals through the life cycle. Applications of mathematical demography to population projection and forecasting, kinship, microdemography, heterogeneity, and multi-state models are considered. The new edition maintains and extends the book?s focus on the consequences of changes in the vital rates. Methods are presented for calculating the sensitivity and elasticity ...

pdf The Sense of Suffering: Constructions of Physical Pain in Early Modern Culture Jan Frans van Dijkhuizen, Karl A.E. Enenkel

Image
The early modern period is a particularly relevant and fascinating chapter in the history of pain. This volume investigates early modern constructions of physical pain from a variety of disciplines, including religious, legal and medical history, literary criticism, philosophy, and art history. The contributors examine how early modern culture interpreted physical pain, as it presented itself for instance during illness, but also analyse the ways in which early moderns employed the idea of physical suffering as a powerful rhetorical tool in debates over other issues, such as the nature of ritual, notions of masculinity, selfhood and community, definitions of religious experience, and the nature of political power. The contributors include: Emese Balint, Maria Berbara, Joseph Campana, Andreas Dehmer, Jan Frans van Dijkhuizen, Karl A.E. Enenkel, Lia van Gemert, Frans Willem Korsten, Mary Ann Lund, Jenny Mayhew, Stephen Pender, Michael Schoenfeldt, Kristine Steenbergh, Anne Tilkorn, Jetze ...

[PDF] Quantum Mechanics: A Modern and Concise Introductory Course (Advanced Texts in Physics) Daniel Bes

Image
I've used the text as an introduction to quantum mechanics in electronic engineering and the results were great. The book is certainly concise, mathematical preliminaries are short and useful, and the approach is simple but the scope is important. It is very axiomatic and from a few principles I could solve the problems of the Schaum Edition devoted to Quantum Mechanics without reading the theoretical part. I've read several books introducing quantum mechanics, and I consider this was the best. https://digzon.com/product/pdf-quantum-mechanics-a-modern-and-concise-introductory-course-advanced-texts-in-physics-daniel-bes/?fsp_sid=80801 #simple #Physics #DanielBes

PDF Advanced Thermodynamics Engineering Kenneth H. Rosen

Image
Although there are a number of satisfactory advanced thermodynamics texts on the market, virtually all of them take a rigorous theoretical and mathematical approach to the subject. Engineering students need a more practical approach-one that offers physical explanations along with the mathematical relation and equations-so they can readily apply them to real world problems.Advanced Thermodynamics Engineering fills that need. The authors take a down-to-earth approach that lays a strong conceptual foundation and provides simple, physical explanations for thermodynamic processes and the practical evaluation of thermodynamic systems. They employ a phenomenological approach throughout the book and include more than 150 engineering examples. The authors stress applications throughout the book, illustrate availability concepts, and emphasize the use of two conservation and two balance equations. They include an abundance of figures, exercises, and tables, plus a summary of important formulae ...

[PDF] Physical fluid dynamics D J Tritton

Image
This book presents the physics of incompressible flow for the benefit of students and others who need to understand fluid motion. In this new edition, much of the material is new or rewritten, but the purpose and style of the first edition are retained. Particular emphasis is given to information obtained by experiment and observation in addition to analysis of the equations of motion. The book's primary concern is to convey a fundamental understanding of the behavior of fluids in motion. Special features include an introductory non-mathematical treatment of three particular flow configurations; extensive consideration of geophysical topics; and detailed coverage of topics that are known primarily through experimental data. Numerous photographs illustrate the phenomena discussed, and a concluding chapter demonstrates the wide applicability of fluid mechanics. New topics in the second edition include double diffusive convection and modern ideas about dynamical chaos. The discu...

[PDF] Instrumentation in Applied Nuclear Chemistry Pablo Mul?s del Pozo (auth.), Jan Krugers (eds.)

Image
This book attempts to build a bridge between two sciences: chemistry and electronics. The inside of the black boxes the nuclear chemist uses daily is explained in simple electronic terms. Knowledge of the inside not only satisfies curiosity but helps one "get the most out of the available equipment." Likewise, this book tries to give sufficient understanding for not "over? buying," that is to say, for buying the equipment which just serves the purpose, instead of buying the best so at least it will serve the purpose. The first three chapters give a concise understanding of what the area of applied nuclear chemistry is concerned with and what kind of equipment is generally used. Chapter 1 gives a theoretical background, while Chapter 3 deals with the practical implementations. Thus, these chapters provide the background to determine what one can expect from the experiments. The remainder of the book is devoted to the practical instrumentation of the experiments. Each...

PDF Finite element methods for engineering sciences: theoretical approach and problem solving techniques Joel Chaskalovic (auth.)

Image
This self-tutorial offers a concise yet thorough grounding in the mathematics necessary for successfully applying FEMs to practical problems in science and engineering. The unique approach first summarizes and outlines the finite-element mathematics in general and then, in the second and major part, formulates problem examples that clearly demonstrate the techniques of functional analysis via numerous and diverse exercises. The solutions of the problems are given directly afterwards. Using this approach, the author motivates and encourages the reader to actively acquire the knowledge of finite- element methods instead of passively absorbing the material, as in most standard textbooks. The enlarged English-language edition, based on the original French, also contains a chapter on the approximation steps derived from the description of nature with differential equations and then applied to the specific model to be used. Furthermore, an introduction to tensor calculus using distribution t...
